Aulik Blog: Identifying your Project

Aulik Blog:

Identifying your remodel.

There’s something that’s just… a little off…

Maybe it’s how your move around your kitchen, maybe it’s how many doors you have to open with your hands full of laundry.  Maybe one room is significantly colder than another, or you don’t have any more room for your golf clubs.

There are no bad ideas during brainstorming…

The best place to start when thinking about a remodel is to DREAM BIG.  Start by looking at your home without really considering cost or impact; and just look at what the ideal conditions are.  Pretend that there are no structural objections or time or cost implications.  Dreaming big will allow you to really get to the heart of what you want from your home.  There will be plenty of time to narrow it down later.

Put things on paper…

The process of imagining a remodel can be inherently disorganized.  Any way to collect your thoughts or ideas is a great idea.  Clip photos of projects you like from magazines or newspapers, start a houzz.com account and make ‘ideabooks’, or just simply write it down.  Start a folder on your coffee table and revisit it often.  Much like editing a paper, stepping away and coming back is great for the creative process.

Cost, Time, Quality: Pick Two…

Although this cliché is a little harsh on the surface, it’s pretty fair and a good place to start.  Try not to think of this as a way of limiting yourself, however, but as a way to temper your more realistic expectations.  As far as time goes, it should be clarified that we’re referring only to the time the project takes to complete.  In fact, we’re far more concerned that you take your time before engaging in a remodel.  Stop, evaluate your space, dream big, re-visit your ideas, and then engage a professional.

Next time, we’ll talk about the process of selecting the right professional for your job.
